During Makahiki, our chiefs placed a strict kapu on war. This meant all fighting had to stop immediately. We dedicated this time to Lono, the god of fertility and peace. Therefore, people could travel safely across the islands to visit family.
We still hold this value close to our hearts today. You hear people talk about “Peace on Earth” during December. However, our ancestors practiced it as a divine law for centuries. The Original Gift Giving
In the old days, we did not wrap boxes in colorful paper. Instead, we prepared ho’okupu. These were high-quality offerings of food, feathers, and fine mats. People gave these gifts to honor the land and the chiefs.

The Warrior Games Live On
Makahiki was famous for the Pa’ani Kahiko, or ancient games. Warriors competed in wrestling, spear throwing, and surfing. These games kept the men sharp without needing actual combat. Furthermore, it was a time for huge crowds to cheer for their favorites.
You can still see this competitive energy today. Many families gather to watch football or local surfing meets during the break. Ultimately, we still love a good challenge during the winter months. It keeps our spirits high and our bodies strong!
