More Than Just Feasting: The Makahiki Arena
You think the Makahiki Festival was just about eating? Nope. Our ancestors knew how to work hard and play harder. The Makahiki Games Hawaii: Traditional Hawaiian Sports were the true highlight of the four-month celebration. They gave everyone a chance to compete and show off their skills.
The games held deep importance for ancient Hawaiian culture. Warfare was kapu (forbidden) during Makahiki. However, people needed to keep their skills sharp. Thus, the games became a critical training ground for our warriors. Chiefs used the contests to find the best athletes and strategists. Therefore, these competitions kept the community strong and ready. The focus was on strength, speed, and agility.
The Original Makahiki Games
These ancient sports were not for the faint of heart. Mokomoko, our form of boxing, required serious courage. Athletes tested their balance and strength in wrestling matches. Another thrilling event was heʻe hōlua, or lava sledding. In addition, people tested their endurance in long-distance footraces called heihei. Spear throwing contests judged accuracy and power. Every event celebrated physical prowess and cunning.

Honoring the Spirit with Luau Cultural Activities

For example, you master precision during coconut shaving. You practice dexterity while making a lei or weaving a headband. Furthermore, you gain wisdom through our Kava tasting ceremony. These hands-on activities maintain the tradition of passing down vital skills.
You see, the skills have changed, but the goal remains the same: sharing ancient Hawaiian culture. Don’t just watch the show. Participate in the skills! Book your night and come test your skills at Mauka Warriors Luau today!
