You MUST experience a fire knife competition. This is an incredible cultural spectacle. You can catch a one-of-a-kind event on Oʻahu in December.
The Mauka Warriors Luau is hosting its first annual Mauka Champions on December 6th. This is an unprecedented competition. Four world champion fire knife dancers lead their own teams. It is a thrilling team-versus-team battle.
Furthermore, plan ahead for May 2026. The 2026 World Fire Knife Competition decides the next World Champion. This event happens at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Mark your calendar for May 7th, 13th, 14th, and 15th!
2. Catch a Vibe: Live Reggae Music
Hawaiʻi has the absolute best live music scene. We love our reggae and island jams. Therefore, you should go where the locals go: Moani’s!
They have two great locations. You can visit them in Waikīkī or Kapolei. The Kapolei spot features live music nightly. They also offer a pau hana (happy hour). The Waikīkī location also has its own event calendar.
My favorite dish? You must try the Pele’s Prawns. Trust me on this one.
3. The Real Deal: Eat Fresh Poke
You cannot leave without eating real poke. I mean the stuff made fresh every morning. You need to visit K. Bay Bros in Kāneʻohe.
This is a small, family-owned business. They make everything fresh for the day themselves. You truly cannot go wrong here. My favorites are the Spicy Combo and the creamy Lava Flow. Go early! They sell out fast.
4. Grab a Drink at the Mall
This is a true local secret. Go grab a drink at Mai Tai’s at Ala Moana Honolulu. Yes, it is located inside the mall. However, this is a local hotspot.
They feature live music every night. On some nights, they even host country nights. Everyone line dances! It is pure, unexpected fun. This is definitely one of the most unexpected none touristy things to do on Oahu.
