The Prophecy: From Comet to King
Prophecy surrounded Kamehameha’s birth. Our ancestors saw a light in the sky. Legend said this comet—a light with feathers like a bird—signaled the arrival of a great chief. Historians agree: Kamehameha was born around 1758, the year Halley’s Comet appeared. That’s destiny, my friends.
His birth name was Paiʻea. Soon, rival chiefs threatened his life. Consequently, Paiʻea went into hiding. He stayed safe in the secluded Waipiʻo Valley. After the danger passed, he emerged. He took the name Kamehameha, meaning The Lonely One.

The Conquest: One Nation, Under Fire
Warfare among the chiefs was widespread then. In 1778, Captain James Cook arrived. This arrival gave Kamehameha access to Western weapons. He used this advantage with strategic genius.
He won fierce battles across the islands. For example, he crushed rivals at Iao Valley in Maui. Next, he achieved a monumental victory at Nuʻuanu Pali on Oʻahu. He then built the huge fortress-temple, Puʻukoholā Heiau. This structure prophesied his total conquest.
The prophecy was fulfilled in 1810. King Kaumualiʻi of Kauaʻi agreed to peace. He peacefully became a tributary ruler. Thus, Kamehameha successfully united all the islands. He founded the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.
